Freelance Art Director, 3D Generalist & Motion Designer

Minimal Setups

James TF is a Motion Designer, 3D Artist, and Generalist who lives in Brighton, UK.
He is a freelance VFX Artist and also a 3D Motion Graphics Designer (MGFX) — he has been in this industry for almost 10 years. His work in creating visual effects for TV shows and ads is at an expert level.

If you look at his work on his website or Behance, you will clearly see that this guy is equally comfortable with real-life adrenaline and 3D renders. He has a Sony A7III and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which he uses to capture his outdoor adventures — climbing, hiking, skiing, all can be seen on his personal Instagram.

Education: First-Class BSc (Hons) in Creative Technologies from Kingston University London — meaning strong theory with solid practical skills.

Now let's move towards his desk setup:

James got his desk custom made. Extra width was kept so that mouse, Wacom tablet, notepad, drawing pad — everything can sit comfortably in one place. The desk placement was also done thoughtfully — natural light comes straight onto the desk through the shutters in the morning, which not only looks serene but is also perfect for the work mood.

James has a clear philosophy:
No matter how expensive a CPU/GPU you buy, if the screen is not good, everything is useless.
That's why he has used a 48-inch OLED monitor. With the big screen and OLED quality, he can see the fine details of his work, which is critical for VFX and 3D.

James has a passion for keyboards, but his most favourite is his GMMK Pro keyboard —

  • Solid aluminium body

  • Tenkeyless design (arrow keys offset + volume knob)
This keyboard looks classy and also gives a premium feel.

For the chair, he chose the Herman Miller Sayl. He had also thought about the Embody, but the Sayl's look and price both seemed better to him. Because of the open mesh backrest, it feels less hot, and if a Dyson fan is placed behind, the work remains completely sweat-free.

James has worked on cable management. He built an external power switch and housing himself, so there is no need to bend down every day. Along with that, he hid the extension leads inside the PC riser, so the wires are minimally visible on the floor. Overall the setup is clean and cool.

James believes that the cost of this desk setup is not actually an expense, but an investment. Having the right tools and a comfortable space is part of his career for freelance work, deadlines, and creative output.
